Samudera Museum was built to model the Portugese ship “Flor De La Mar”, the first Western ship that arrived in Melaka in the 16th century. This maritime museum was built in 1990 and officially opened on 13th June 1994 in Jalan Merdeka near the estuary of the Melaka River.
The main theme of the museum is on the history of seafaring in Melaka as well as the spread of Melaka’s commercial influence during the Malay Sultanate right up to the colonization eras of the Portugese, the Dutch and the English. Exhibits include old maps, scale model ships,weapony and maritime-related accessories and artifacts.
One of the latest activity that have been held by the museum is Heritage Sleepover@The Museum where visitors can sleep and experience a one night at the museum. The objective of this product is to expose the public on the role of the museum as a center of knowledge and edutainment. Tour guides will be conducting this tour.
