Considered as a bustling border town and is a blur of colors, sights and sounds, Padang Besar is a major stopover along the rail route between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. It is a border town positioned at northern part of Perlis in Malaysia and situated on the border with Songkhla, Thailand, that is 35 kilometers northeast of Kangar and about 70 kilometers southwest of Hadyai.

Many Malaysians travel up to Thailand through this point and likewise their Thai counterparts, on shopping, business or recreational trips as Padang Besar is a bargain hunter's paradise and boasts duty-free shops along with variety of stuffs, souvenirs, clothing, fruits, textiles, handicrafts, foodstuff and artifacts that bear testimony to the rich cultural legacy of the state. Despite of, immigration checkpoints and some signs, it is hard to discern where the border actually lies.
