YIK MUN Tanjung Malim pau or Chinese-style steamed dumplings have been around since the mid-1920s. Although the restaurant sells a few varieties, (kaya, red bean and chicken among them) the most distinctive is its curried chicken pau. Its roti kahwin is also classic.

Yik Mun has a couple of outlets in the Klang Valley, for example at the Hartamas Shopping Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Specialty 1:
Kari Kai Pau (Cantonese), steamed chicken dumplings

The chicken curry pau, which is halal, has all the distinct tastes of the highly-popular Chinese dumpling but with a different filling. It is popular among people of all ethnic backgrounds.

Specialty 2:
Roti Kahwin (Malay), sandwiched toasted bread

Roti Kahwin - two slices of toast held together with melting butter and a generous spread of thick kaya (jam made from coconut milk, duck or chicken eggs which are flavored by pandan leaf and sweetened with sugar)

Apart from pau, Yik Mun produces a famous kaya. The roti kahwin is two pieces of toasted kopitiam bread, spread with generous amounts of kaya and margarine and slapped together. The quality of the ingredients and how the bread is toasted make all the difference.

Other remarks:
The coffeeshop is packed with people from all ethnic backgrounds much of the time.

We couldn't resist ordering the three most popular paos...
1) Curry chicken - Yummy!
2) Tau sah (Black bean paste) - Average
3) Kaya - Nice!
