Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary or KKCBS is located just 2 kilometers from the city center. Wraps over 24 hectares of mangrove wetlands, near the Likas Sport Complex and residential bungalows, the sanctuary is environmental nature education center, which providing urban recreation and nature appreciation. Mangrove plants are specially adapted to grow in the mud and brackish water to give shelter to many birds, crabs, prawns and fish. Being a vital refuge and feeding ground for many species of resident migratory birds, there are about 80 species have been identified. Community volunteers from all walks of life to maintain the sanctuary, for example, WWF Malaysia, Sabah Wildlife Department and corporate donors.
A 1.5 kilometers or a 45 minute boardwalk will brings visitors deep into the mangrove jungle where the land meets the sea. These unique natural landscapes give visitors a pleasant experience to enjoy fresh air and tranquility while bird-watching which is best at dawn or at dusk when they return to roost for the night.
