Mt Kinabalu is the main point not only to the Kinabalu Park but to the whole of Sabah for this magnificent granite massif stands at 4 095.2 meters. Kinabalu Park on the other hand, is Malaysia’s first World Heritage designated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its ‘outstanding universal values’ and being the world most important biological sites. Covers a staggering area of 754 square kilometers,

The Kinabalu Park has been established as a state park in 1964. Being a botanical paradise, it is blessed with an astounding variety of flora and fauna that ranges over 4 climate zones, from the rich lowland dipterocarp forest through the montane oak, rhododendron; the coniferous forests, to the alpine meadow plants to the stunted bushes of the summit zone. It takes about 2 hours drive from the city of Kota Kinabalu and is a popular get away for city dwellers in which they can enjoy the cool refreshing air. While the focus of the Park is the mountain, about 80% of visitors come simply to enjoy the tranquility of this place.

Kinabalu Park Headquarters is positioned on the southern boundary, at an altitude of 1 563 meters. Most of the Park’s conveniences are placed within the Kinabalu Park including visitors’ accommodations, restaurants, exhibits centers and Park offices where visitors must register.

Started in 1981, Mt. Kinabalu Botanical Garden (Mountain Garden) is one of the main attractions at The Kinabalu Park. This 5 acre garden is homed to an outstanding display of diverse plant life on the mountain as flora from all over the Park has been replanted here. Not only beautiful to the eye bearer, many of these plants are contain with medical value.

As for climbing the majestic summit of Borneo, climbing Mt. Kinabalu can be done in 2 days but a more comfortable climb will takes about 3 days. One will experience the rich biological diversity including the rare plants, orchids, birds and many more.
