Uchisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is an iconic, towering citadel carved directly into a massive, naturally formed volcanic rock pinnacle in the highest village of Cappadocia. Standing approximately 60 meters tall, its name translates to “Outer Citadel,” as it historically served as the region’s primary lookout and final refuge.

This structure is not a conventionally built castle but rather a fortress created by hollowing out the soft tuff rock over centuries. Its interior is a fascinating, maze-like labyrinth of interconnected rooms, tunnels, storage areas, and hidden chapels, once housing up to 1,000 inhabitants. Its strategic position allowed residents to spot invaders, particularly during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras.

Today, visitors can climb hundreds of steps through the internal passages to reach the summit terraces. The ultimate reward is the 360-degree panoramic view of the surreal Cappadocian landscape, offering unparalleled vistas of Pigeon Valley, Göreme, and the distant Mount Erciyes. The surrounding village has also adapted, blending traditional cave dwellings with modern boutique hotels, making Uçhisar a must-visit destination for its history and breathtaking outlook.
