Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin

The Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-Shin is a commanding landmark situated in the heart of Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square. Erected in 1968, this impressive bronze statue honors Admiral Yi Sun-Sin (1545–1598), one of Korea’s most revered national heroes.

Admiral Yi is celebrated for his strategic genius and undefeated naval record during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century. He is famous for employing innovative tactics and technologically superior vessels, like the iconic Geobukseon (Turtle Ship), a model of which stands before the statue. The base features a fountain, known as the 12.23 Fountain, commemorating the 23 victories he achieved with just 12 warships.

Standing proudly, the statue embodies the courage and patriotism that helped repel foreign invaders and secure the nation’s sovereignty. It is a potent symbol of Korean resilience and military prowess, often visited by citizens reflecting on their history and national pride. The statue is located near the Statue of King Sejong the Great, forming a historical nexus in the city center.
