Unhyeongung Royal Residence

Unhyeongung Royal Residence, often considered Seoul’s unofficial “sixth palace,” offers an intimate glimpse into the life of the late Joseon Dynasty royal family. Located in the Jongno-gu district, it was the private residence of Heungseon Daewongun, the powerful prince regent and father of King Gojong. The future King Gojong was born and lived here until he ascended the throne at age 12.

The complex served as a vital political stage for Daewongun’s reforms. Although it was once as large as Changdeokgung Palace, much of it was lost over time, with part of the grounds now occupied by Duksung Women’s University. The remaining core structures include Noandang Hall (the men’s quarters where Daewongun held court), Irodang Hall (the women’s quarters), and Norakdang Hall, which notably hosted the grand 1866 wedding of King Gojong and Empress Myeongseong.

Today, Unhyeongung is a well-preserved historical site that is free to enter. It frequently hosts cultural programs, including annual reenactments of the traditional royal wedding ceremony. Visitors are often encouraged to rent a hanbok (traditional Korean dress) for photographs, enhancing the immersive historical experience.
