Barelang Bridge 1 & 2

The Barelang Bridge is not a single structure but an iconic chain of six different bridges that connect the major islands of Batam, Rempang, and Galang in Indonesia’s Riau Archipelago, giving the system its acronymic name (Batam-Rempang-Galang). Conceived by the former Indonesian President B.J. Habibie to transform the connecting islands into industrial zones, the project was constructed between 1992 and 1998.

While the total span of the six bridges is about 2,000 meters, the road trip from the first to the last bridge covers approximately 50 kilometers. The most famous and picturesque bridge in the system is the first one, officially named the Tengku Fisabilillah Bridge, which connects Batam and Tonton Island. With its resemblance to the Golden Gate Bridge due to its towering pylons and cable-stayed design, it has become the main architectural icon of Batam and a major tourist attraction. The bridges are named after rulers of the Riau Sultanate, reflecting the region’s rich Malay heritage. Visitors often stop to enjoy the panoramic sea views and fresh seafood at restaurants located near the landmark.
