Pura Taman Ayun

Pura Taman Ayun, located in the village of Mengwi, Badung Regency, is one of Bali’s most significant and beautiful royal temples. Its name translates to the “Temple of the Beautiful Garden,” a title it lives up to with its stunning, meticulously maintained grounds.

Established in 1634 AD by the King of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Putu, it served as the royal family temple and a central place of worship for the kingdom’s people. The entire complex is surrounded by a wide, tranquil moat, giving it the appearance of floating on water.

The architecture reflects classic Balinese design, featuring intricate stone carvings and several courtyards organized according to the Tri Mandala concept, moving from the outer public area to the most sacred inner sanctum (Utama Mandala). The most striking elements are the towering multi-tiered meru shrines, representing Mount Meru, the cosmic center of the Hindu universe, with tiers reaching up to eleven stories.

In 2012, Taman Ayun Temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, recognizing its integral role in the traditional Subak irrigation system. A visit offers a profound glimpse into Balinese history, spiritual philosophy, and exquisite artistry. Visitors should dress modestly as a sign of respect
