Gunung Batur

Gunung Batur, located in the Kintamani district of Bali, is one of the island’s most iconic and active volcanoes. Standing at an elevation of 1,717 meters above sea level, it draws hundreds of visitors daily, primarily for its spectacular sunrise trekking experience.

The volcano is famed for being situated within a massive caldera, which was formed by massive ancient eruptions. This caldera houses the tranquil Lake Batur (Danau Batur), Bali’s largest crater lake, and several small villages like Toya Bungkah.

The most popular activity is the pre-dawn hike, which typically begins around 2 or 3 AM. Guided treks lead adventurers up steep, sometimes slippery, paths to the summit to witness the sun rise over the surrounding landscape, often appearing above a sea of clouds. Trekkers are usually rewarded with a simple, freshly cooked breakfast using the natural steam from the volcanic vents at the top.

The Kintamani area, surrounding the caldera, offers breathtaking panoramic views that make the entire region a cultural and natural landmark, recognized as part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. Visitors can also relax in the natural hot springs nearby after their adventurous climb.
