The Peranakan Museum in Singapore is dedicated to exploring the vibrant, cross-cultural art and heritage of Peranakan communities across Southeast Asia. Housed in the beautifully conserved former Tao Nan School building on Armenian Street, the museum showcases one of the world’s finest public collections of Peranakan objects.
The refreshed museum is organized across three floors, exploring Peranakan identity through the thematic lenses of Origins, Home, and Style. Visitors can discover the fascinating blend of Chinese, Malay, and other influences evident in the material culture—from the exquisite beadwork and intricate kebaya fashion to the famous colourful Nyonya porcelain.
Exhibits delve into Peranakan life, featuring ornate furniture, traditional wedding attire, and artifacts that tell stories of their unique customs, cuisine, and language. The museum also integrates contemporary expressions, including works by local artists, to encourage reflection on what it means to be Peranakan today. It offers a captivating glimpse into a rich, hybrid culture that is deeply woven into the fabric of Singapore’s history.
