Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque

The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque, located in Shah Alam, Selangor, is an iconic landmark and the state mosque of Selangor. Affectionately known as the Blue Mosque due to its magnificent blue and silver dome, it is the largest mosque in Malaysia and the second-largest in Southeast Asia.

Commissioned by the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, construction began in 1982 and was completed in 1988. The mosque’s design is a harmonious blend of traditional Malay and Modernist Islamic architecture. Its most striking feature is the massive main dome, which measures 51.2 in diameter and rises to a height of about 106.7 meters. It is flanked by four soaring minarets, each standing at approximately 142.3 meter tall.

The expansive interior, featuring a Belgian worsted wool carpet, can accommodate up to 24,000 worshippers. Sunlight filtering through the blue stained-glass windows casts a serene, bluish ambiance across the hall. The structure is further enhanced by intricate Arabic calligraphy (khat) by Egyptian artist Sheikh Abdel Moneim Mohamed Ali El Sharkawi.13 The mosque also overlooks the Garden of Islamic Arts, a landscaped park featuring nine galleries showcasing Islamic art.
