Jakarta Car Free Day

Jakarta’s Car Free Day (CFD), locally known as Hari Bebas Kendaraan Bermotor (HBKB), is a cherished weekly event held every Sunday morning that temporarily transforms major city thoroughfares into vibrant public spaces. The primary goal is to promote a healthier and more sustainable urban lifestyle by significantly restricting motorized vehicles.

The most famous route covers the central Jalan Sudirman and Jalan MH Thamrin avenues, stretching from the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (Bundaran HI) down towards Senayan. This massive stretch is closed to private cars and motorcycles, typically from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

During this time, the road becomes an expansive, open-air venue for activities like jogging, cycling, yoga, and family recreation. CFD serves to reduce air pollution, alleviate traffic stress, and foster community spirit. Besides fitness, the event is a cultural hub, featuring street performers, food vendors, and community awareness campaigns. While the main event focuses on the central corridor, several other areas across Jakarta also host their own smaller, localized CFD events on specific Sundays of the month. It is a highly anticipated tradition that offers Jakartans a rare, peaceful respite from the city’s usual congestion.
