Kampung Morten

Melaka’s Living Museum of Malay Heritage

Nestled along the scenic Melaka River, Kampung Morten stands as a captivating ‘living museum’ and one of the last traditional Malay villages in the heart of Melaka City. Gazetted as a heritage village, it offers a tranquil glimpse into a bygone era, beautifully contrasting with the modern high-rises that surround it.

The village is named after Frederick Joseph Morten, a British land revenue collector who was instrumental in transforming the original swampy land into a thriving settlement for the Malay community in the 1920s. Today, it is home to over a hundred traditional wooden Malay houses, built on stilts and featuring the distinctive Melaka Malay architectural style. These homes are admired for their intricate wood carvings, unique staircases, and vibrant, painted facades.

The most famous house, Villa Sentosa, operates as a privately-run living museum, inviting visitors to step inside and experience the furnishings, artifacts, and lifestyle of a traditional Malay family from the early 20th century.

Kampung Morten is a highlight of the Melaka River Cruise, particularly at night when the houses are illuminated, reflecting a serene and picturesque image on the water. It remains a deeply-rooted community that actively preserves its customs and architecture, making it an essential and authentic cultural stop for any visitor to Melaka.
