Cherating Turtle Sanctuary

The Cherating Turtle Sanctuary, officially known as the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre (TCIC), is a vital conservation facility located on Chendor Beach in Cherating, Pahang, Malaysia. Established in 1972 by the Department of Fisheries, its primary mission is to protect endangered marine turtles, particularly the Green Turtle and the now-rare Leatherback Turtle, which traditionally nest on these shores.

The sanctuary serves as both a hatchery and an educational center. During the peak nesting season, typically from April to August, staff collect the laid eggs to incubate them in a safe environment, away from poachers and natural predators. Once hatched, the baby turtles are nurtured until they are strong enough to be released into the sea.

Visitors are welcome to tour the center, which features informative exhibits on the life cycles, habitats, and conservation challenges facing the four species of turtles that nest in Malaysia. The most anticipated activity, usually occurring between June and October, is the opportunity for the public to participate in releasing the young hatchlings into the ocean at dusk—a truly memorable experience. The sanctuary is generally closed on Mondays, and entry is free of charge, making it an accessible and meaningful stop for nature lovers visiting Malaysia’s east coast.
