The Bundaran HI Monument, officially named Monumen Selamat Datang (The Welcome Monument), is one of Jakarta’s most recognizable city icons. Situated at the center of the bustling Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (Bundaran HI) in Central Jakarta, it symbolizes the capital’s warm hospitality.
The monument was commissioned by President Soekarno in 1962 as part of the city beautification projects for the 4th Asian Games hosted in Jakarta. The design concept, sketched by Vice Governor Henk Ngantung, was brought to life by renowned sculptor Edhi Sunarso.
The statue features two bronze figures—a man and a woman—waving with open hands, symbolizing the welcoming nature of the Indonesian nation to international guests and athletes. The female figure traditionally holds a bouquet of flowers. Standing about 30 meters tall on its pedestal and fountain base, the monument faces north to greet arrivals from the National Monument (Monas) area.
Today, Bundaran HI remains a vibrant hub, surrounded by major business districts and luxury hotels. The monument continues to stand as a symbol of national pride, welcome, and Jakarta’s dynamic spirit, often serving as a focal point for community activities like Sunday’s Car-Free Day events.
