Seri Menanti Royal Museum

The Seri Menanti Royal Museum (Muzium Diraja Istana Lama Seri Menanti) is a significant cultural landmark located in Seri Menanti, the royal capital of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The museum is uniquely housed within the Istana Lama (Old Palace), which served as the official residence for the rulers of Negeri Sembilan until 1932.

This magnificent structure is a masterpiece of traditional Minangkabau architecture, instantly recognizable by its sloping roofline, said to resemble buffalo horns. Constructed between 1902 and 1908, the five-story wooden palace is famed for being built entirely without nails or screws, relying instead on wooden pegs—a true testament to local craftsmanship. Its structure is supported by ninety-nine massive timber pillars.

Inside, the museum showcases the rich heritage of the Negeri Sembilan royalty. The collection features royal regalia, historical artifacts, traditional costumes, ceremonial weapons, and documents that shed light on the state’s history and the unique Adat Perpatih (matrilineal customs).

Set amidst serene surroundings, the Seri Menanti Royal Museum offers visitors an immersive experience into the royal lifestyle and the distinct architectural legacy of the Minangkabau people who founded the state.
