Balai Nobat

Balai Nobat, often referred to as the Hall of Drums, is a significant historical and cultural monument located in the heart of Alor Setar, Kedah. This unique structure serves as the repository for the Nobat, the traditional royal musical ensemble of the Kedah Sultanate.

The current octagonal tower, featuring a distinctive yellow, onion-shaped dome, was reconstructed in 1906 under the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, replacing an older timber structure. The architecture is noted for its Islamic aesthetic, symbolizing the state’s royal elegance.

The Nobat itself is a percussion-based orchestra, rumored to include drums gifted by the Sultan of Melaka in the 15th century. Its music, which has never been written down, plays a vital role, traditionally performed only during major royal ceremonies such as coronations, royal weddings, and funerals, signifying the Sultan’s power and sovereignty.

Although the instruments are generally not on public display, and entry inside is usually restricted to authorized personnel, Balai Nobat stands as a proud landmark in Alor Setar, symbolizing the deep-rooted royal heritage and musical traditions of Kedah. It is situated near other historical sites like the High Court and Masjid Zahir.
