Tempurung Cave

Tempurung Cave (Gua Tempurung), located in Gopeng, Perak, is renowned as the largest limestone cave in Peninsular Malaysia. Its name is derived from the Malay word for coconut shell (tempurung), which describes the shape of its five massive domes. Estimated to be over 400 million years old, the cave system spans about 4.5 kilometers in total, with a developed portion of approximately 1.9 kilometers open to the public.

The cave is a geological marvel, featuring five distinct domes, each with unique stalactite and stalagmite formations, temperatures, and water levels. Highlights include the Golden Flowstone Cavern with its glittering cascade and the immense Alam Cavern. An underground river runs through the cave for about 1.6 kilometers, offering adventurous “wet tours.”

Beyond its natural beauty, Gua Tempurung holds historical significance, having served as a hideout for communists during the Malayan Emergency and as a site for past tin mining operations, remnants of which can still be seen. Well-developed with lights, stairs, and bridges, it offers tour packages catering to everyone from casual sightseers to adventure seekers.
