Penang Hill

Penang Hill, also known locally as Bukit Bendera, is a prominent hill resort near George Town, Penang Island, offering a cool respite from the city’s heat. Its highest peak, Western Hill, stands at 833 meters (2,733 ft) above sea level. Established during the British colonial era in the late 18th century as a retreat, it is one of the oldest hill stations in Southeast Asia.

The most iconic way to reach the summit is via the Penang Hill Funicular Railway. This modernised system is the steepest funicular railway in Malaysia, providing a swift and scenic journey through the lush tropical rainforest.

At the top, visitors enjoy panoramic views of George Town, the mainland, and on clear days, even Langkawi. Attractions include The Habitat, an eco-tourism park featuring treetop canopy walks like the Langur Way Canopy Walk. The area also boasts historical colonial bungalows, diverse flora and fauna, and cultural sites like the Penang Hill Mosque and the Sri Aruloli Murugan Temple. With its refreshing climate and array of nature and heritage spots, Penang Hill remains a top destination for visitors.
